Registration Information
Membership to a local or state guild is NOT a requirement for pre-registration or attendance for the Weaving in the Sunshine State basket weaving retreat. The registration fee is inclusive of all miscellaneous costs incurred for attending this event.
Each registered attendee will receive a Goodie Bag with our logo and filled with weaving related items, flyers, and coupons. The Goodie Bag is the perfect shopping accessory for Teachers Marketplace (on Wednesday evening) and for picking up weaving supplies from our vendors - MJE2 Weave (Jimmie Earl & Mary McKinzie), Phoenix Rising Ultd. (Barb Nelson), and Bonnie's Baskets (Bonnie Rideout). Don't forget to pre-order supplies and/or kits from the vendors and teachers for easy pick-up at the retreat! All of their contact information can be found within the Retreat Brochure.
Your (included) daily lunch buffet will be served with table linens, glass plates, and REAL silverware - not your typical convention boxed meal! Woven on a 6” square wood base, this reed and sea grass basket uses over/under and 3-rod wale to weave up to its folded rim embellished with natural wood beads. The basket is finished with color matching smocking.

Triple twine a bunny belly using round reed around a mold that you keep. After easily shaping this, let the teacher show you how to whitewash the reed to match your bunny’s coloring. Assemble your Benjamin Bunny with time to add a carrot. It’s a wonderful Spring accent!

Special Tools Required: 4 Copper clips without teeth, sharp side cutters, and small bent tip packing tool.
Start on an oak base and weave a Japanese twill to get the nicely rounded bottom shape. The neck incorporates strips of cherry framed with twining. The rim is cherry with bleached cane. Maple wood strips form the ring of square knots.

Inspired by a willow Christmas tree seen at the Korb (Basket) Festival in Lichtenfels, Germany, this is an easy weave for all weavers. All spokes are glued bamboo, and the weavers are seagrass. Techniques include short rows and twining. The star on top is woven with hemp over florist wire.

Learn open diagonal weaving on this traditional Shaker style cheese basket. It can be a little challenging – but so fun and rewarding once completed. Options of natural reed sizes will be available in class.

Start on an oval wood base and focus on gently shaping the straight sides using both reed and dyed bleached cane. Lash the rim with waxed polyester cord. The decorative X’s are woven with two sizes of dyed bleached cane.

Weave two baskets over metal candle stick holders. The bases and solid rims are cherry and cane is used for the staves and weavers. This pair is the perfect addition to your dining room table. A delicate little 5” round melon basket for those who haven’t ever tried a rib basket. Start with a God’s eye and learn to change reed colors. Emphasis on preparing spokes, shaping, and turn-backs.

“Cotton” is one of three baskets that comprise the Mid-Century Vanity Set. Each is woven over a plastic shell that becomes a permanent feature of the basket. All materials including the Cherry wood base, rims, and lid are made personally by Eric and woven with the increasingly scarce material, Black Ash.

Allow your imagination to help you coil a placemat using both Sweetgrass and Southern long-leaf pine needles lashed with Palmetto strips. Techniques taught will enable students to create a variety of designs. No water required for class. This is an art form stemming from West Africa over 300 years ago.

This graceful platter looks beautiful on the table or displayed on the wall. Start with an overlaid base and end with an attractive woven rim. Add on tracs compliment the proportion and increase the strength of the sides. Diagonal twining creates the striking center of the platter.

The centerpiece of this basket is the fractal burning done on a maple wood base. Students will insert dyed black cane into the base, twine and weave the sides. The dyed reed rim has leather handles with cane on the outside as accent. Lash the basket with waxed linen thread.

Students begin coiling on an irregular shaped cabochon and will use techniques including the basic stitch, wrapping a row, adding beads between rows, adding accent beads, and will use a diamond stitch to finish the design. Previous pine needle coiling experience will be very helpful.

This elegant breadbasket has a unique maple wood base. Woven with reed, it has an arrow design that is woven with dyed Hamburg cane. The rim is lashed with waxed linen. Small acorn knobs are used for the feet finishing a basket that that is not only a great size but can serve many purposes.

This fun basket features a braid done with your choice of three colors of reed – or two reed colors and a strand of seagrass. It is woven on a wood base over a class mold. The natural weaving makes the colorful braid pop! Less experienced weavers will be given an alternate accent section in lieu of the 3-strand braid.

This is a perennial favorite made from all-natural hand split white oak prepared by hand using heirloom homemade tools. The basket begins on a herringbone bottom, has a round top, and a solid Oak handle. Billy will share how timber is selected and hand stripped. A beautiful piece of Ozark Tradition!

Begin on a racetrack base with natural spokes. Learn triple twine with a step-up, inserting spoke overlays, and finish with a traditional lashed rim. The eye-catching infinite figure 8 weave in smoked reed is added when the basket is complete.

Chai’s Delight is a wonderful blend of simple techniques accompanied by more challenging ones. The basket features an intricate cloverleaf base, twining, 3-rod wale, 4-rod wale, a double herringbone siding, and finishes with a classy Japanese rolled rim. A true delight to the eyes!

Begin on a striking acrylic bloom base handmade by Susan. The inserted loop spokes add interest as well as strength. The sides use a 3-rod “becoming” design pattern to keep it interesting and the “pretzel” border utilizes the spokes to create a stunning and strong border that looks difficult – but it’s not!

Previous coiling experience is necessary for this class. Swirly can be a fairly large wall piece depending on your experience. Stitches include single stitch, wrapping a row, Indian Blanket stitch, and spacing the “swirls”. Students will be encouraged to create their own design and may not finish completely in class.

Experience with large baskets, hand strength, and ability to use a knife are needed. Begin with a laced, half-round braced, and lashed base with added X weavers. Shape the sides with continuous Japanese weave. Riveted shaker tape and dowel handles are glued to the rim. Lash with waxed polyester cord.

In the morning, create your unique random weave basket using both natural materials and reed. Add a handle if you wish. The finished design can either hang on the wall or sit on the counter. After lunch, by folding palm sheaths from Hawaii, create a basket that can be used for dry floral arrangements or kitchen utensil storage. Finish both with Jelena’s philodendron roses!

An eye-catching design begins with a woven filled base over a hand hewed oak handle. Students will use the over/under weave and twining to complete the sides and finish with a seagrass rim. After inserting the hand carved oak feet, add the diamond embellishment with cane.

Options: A variety of broom corn and thread in class.
Note: Students may make up to 4 brooms as time allows.
Using traditional Appalachian techniques, learn to make brooms on stick handles, single and double cobweb brooms, and hearth brooms. Students will stitch in the round and stitch flat starting with a small broom and progress to bigger ones while learning different plaiting or banding techniques.

Learn the basics of broom tying while making this fun kitchen set – also known as a “shaker set” – a pot scrubber, crumb brush and a cake tester. The set makes a fun and useful keepsake souvenir from the weaving retreat.

Start on an oak base and a simple weave of three colors and sizes of reed gets you to the rim. Lash with waxed cord and then lace on reed leaves. Create the looped flowers with dyed maple strips. The basket is held gently in place by the wire wheels.

This great kitchen basket is woven over an antique potato masher. The spokes are placed over and under the masher. The side weaving is start/stop using both natural and dyed reeds. Students may request specific colors for the accent by contacting Peggy at mccarsonp@gmail.com.

What a fun class! Anne will teach the basics of random weaving a basket. These baskets are surprisingly sturdy and are a great way to use up leftover reeds. Each basket will be unique and individual to the weaver.

The trivet starts on a 3D printed jig and uses twining to secure the spokes and 3-rod wale to create the body. Depending on the student’s skill level, either a “Trac” or “Chira” border will be added. The jig is included and additional reed for more trivets for can be purchased for a nominal fee.

This charming little basket is designed to hold a half pint canning jar, which is included. It has a wood base and a burlap ribbon accent weaver. The basket is finished with a traditional waxed linen lashed rim, a burlap flower embellishment, and raffia to tie onto the jar.

This is a traditional bird feeder made of willow. While best used for suet balls, a small plant would also fit and complement the weaving. The class is a great way to get a feel for working with willow. The weaving goes quickly, so students will have the opportunity to make two within the class time.

This unique weave was known to drive the weaver “mad” but not in this class. After selecting three colors of 5/8” ribbon, follow the step-by-step process by “blocking” the ribbon out on a “board” with fusible interfacing underneath to hold in place. Select a mat to highlight and finish your piece.

The project is perfect for the beginner or someone wanting a relaxing weave. Weave on a frame with all ribs glued into place, no shaping is required. A variety of sticks will be used for the frame with bamboo ribs. Weaving is simply over/under with sea grass and twining to secure the ends.

This waste basket is made from all-natural hand split white oak prepared by hand using heirloom homemade tools. The basket begins on a herringbone bottom and students can decide on either a rectangle or oval rim. Billy will share how timber is selected and hand stripped. Take home a piece of the Ozarks!

Allow your imagination to help you coil a basket for décor or everyday use. Sweetgrass and Southern long-leaf pine needles lashed with Palmetto strips. Techniques taught will enable students to create a variety of designs. This is an art form stemming from West Africa over 300 years ago.

Do the math and you’ll be weaving the Fibonacci spiral weave! This fun weave starts with a hardwood base and uses an apothecary jar as your mold. Two colors of dyed tortoise shell cane are used for spokes and black cane for weavers. Finish with coastal Florida accent pieces.

A double wall reed basket that is natural on the inside and features varying shades of color on the outside. Della is perfect for muffins, fruits, or snacks. A 5” slotted acrylic bloom base is used in conjunction with round reed to create a practical piece of art. The 3-rod spiral designs morphs into solid using a design element called “becoming”. A twine arrow helps with the border spacing. Finish with a double diagonal rim.

Special Tools Required: Sharp side cutters and shears, tapestry needle, and super glue.
Begin on a square open weave base and learn how to get a domed cathead-style base using an upright weaving technique. The rounded shape is a continuous weave with a skip stitch. The 3-point corner braid uses bleached cane. Lash with waxed cord. Karen will drill holes for the screw, bead, and nut attached rim.
CLASS SELECTIONS:
· Note the skill level, tools required, and class times to make sure you can meet the requirements.
· Note the dimensions of the project. Some may be larger or smaller than they appear in the featured photo.
· Some classes offer color options. Mark your choices on the Registration Form.
· There is a difference between expanding your skill set and choosing classes beyond your skill level. It is unfair to the instructor and other students to take a class that is beyond your level of expertise. Everyone wants you to be successful in completing your class project while not dominating the instructor’s time for one-on-one explanations of techniques it is assumed you already have knowledge of. Expertise in one weaving medium does not necessarily translate to the same level in other materials.
SKILL LEVELS:
All Levels – For the beginner weaver who has little to no experience and may need practice with techniques or shaping, all the way to advanced students.
Beginner/Intermediate – Having gained basic weaving skills, this skill level introduces new pattern weaves such as twill and different rim and lashing finish variations. Larger baskets and patterns with specific weaving instruction are included at this level.
Intermediate – Intermediate weavers have gained proficiency in weaving techniques. They can begin with ease and little instruction and have mastered basic weaving techniques. They do not need direction for setting up bases, twining, completing over/under weaves, or creating rims using the specific materials mentioned in the class description.
Intermediate/Advanced – These weavers are quite skilled in most techniques and may only require assistance with difficult or unique designs and shaping. Most weaving in class can be done independently and without specific instruction.
Advanced – Advanced weavers are highly proficient and experienced. They have mastered most weaving techniques and are ready to be challenged. Teachers are confident these students will not need assistance with basic weaving skills.

Our venue has recently upgraded from an IHG Crowne Plaza to a DoubleTree under the Hilton flag. While this is good news as renovations have taken place to many of the hotel's common areas, it is also a bit of a confusing time for making reservations. Please note this is NOT a venue change of location - simply a change from IHG to Hilton.
If you have already made your reservation, you do not need to do anything. Reservations made through the IHG website or by phone were automatically transfered to the Hilton system on December 19th. DO NOT MAKE A NEW RESERVATION.
